For this novice school, we will be on the grippy concrete of Laurinburg-Maxton airport. Your event chairs plan to set up two courses - one on the runway at the usual start/finish area and one in the "P" area. As always, these plans are subject to change depending on acts of war, decisions by the military, and unplanned events (such as airplane related incidents).
If you plan to attend the autocross the following day, note that you need to preregister for the autocross separately from this school.
THE INFORMATION:
- Event chairs are Kevin Allen, Christine Allen and Cosby Wood.
- You do not need to be a current THSCC member to take this school.
- Entry fee will be $35 and includes a box lunch.
- If you have preregistered and cannot attend, PLEASE, PLEASE REMOVE YOUR NAME from the preregistration list on the website!
- Remember that Laurinburg is not all that close to gas stations, air, food, etc. If you have to leave the site, you'll miss out on valuable instructing and practice time.
- No overnight camping is allowed on site and absolutely no exploring other parts of the airport! Gates will open at 7:30a.m. on the morning of the event. On-site registration will be open from 8-9:00 a.m. Drivers' meeting will begin shortly after 9:00 a.m. DO NOT BE LATE!
- There will be no need for numbers or class letters at this event
- We will be changing workers on-the-fly as we do at a regular autocross to maximize the time you have to run the courses.
THE COURSES:
- The Runway Course (morning): This course will have a lot of the most-used elements of autocross courses (turnarounds, slaloms, offsets, etc.). We will focus on the concepts of "slow in, fast out". This course will NOT have a timer on it. We will not be keeping score. We will simply be helping you get used to dealing with these elements without the pressure of a timer. We will also have instructors out working the course with you when you're not running so that you can not only become better course workers, but can also see and learn from other's mistakes and successes from OUTSIDE the car.
- The "P" Course (afternoon): This course will focus on putting together what you've learned while also running against the clock. You will get 4 shots at this course to set your best time - just like you will an autocross. This will be run just like a normal event, except there will only be one or two timing workers who will be handing out post-it notes with your times on them.
LUNCH:
Christine Allen will be providing lunches for each participant and instructor. Lunch is included in the cost of the school. We will take a lunch break after running the morning course, during which some members of our novice class of 2005 will be speaking about driver prep, car prep, and how to keep getting faster. There will be a Q&A session afterward.
WORKING/RUNNING:
Students will be divided into two groups. Group 1 will be driving first and Group 2 will be working first. As Group 1 students finish all of their runs, they will go out to work the course, relieving the Group 2 students to come in to drive.
ENTERING THE SITE:
For this event, we will use the "Golden Knights entrance". You can find directions here. If this is your first time at this site, keep a watchful eye for the large orange cone marking the entrance. Proceed down the path and onto the site. You should encounter "gate workers" either near the entrance or shortly after you enter the site who are there to have you sign the waiver, give you an wristband (which you must wear on your left wrist), and provide handouts for the day's activities. The "gate workers" will direct you to the pit area. Proceed to the pit area, find an open pit spot to park your car (remember not to park in a spot where someone else has already unloaded their "stuff"), visit registration at the bus, then return to your car and remove all loose contents. Raise the hood of your car and a "tech worker" will come by to do the tech inspection.
HOTEL INFO:
We have negotiated a discount price of $65 for a King or Double room at the Hampton Inn in Laurinburg. Ask for the Tarheel Sports Car Club discount. The phone number there is 910-277-1516.
If you have any additional questions, feel free to email the Autocross VPs.
We look forward to seeing you at this event!
