Hey all you novice autocrossers out there! It's time, once again, to plan to get your learnin' on at the spring THSCC novice school!
Information:
- Your event chairs are Jim Pastorius and Rick Butters.
- You do not need to be a current THSCC member to take this school.
- You may take this school if you have never run more than 8 autocrosses.
- Your entry fee includes a box lunch.
Now for the details for those of you who are already preregistered...
- If you have preregistered and cannot attend, PLEASE, PLEASE REMOVE YOUR NAME from the preregistration file!
- Remember that Laurinburg is not very close to gas stations, air, food, and so forth. If you have to leave, you will miss out on valuable instructing.
- No overnight camping is allowed on site! Gates will open at 7:30a.m. on the morning of the event.
- There will be no need for numbers at this event and, obviously, no scoring.
For this spring's novice school, we return to one of our favorite sites, the vast open runways of Laurinburg-Maxton airport. Your event chairs plan to set up two courses on the runway in the part of the airport often used by the Army's Golden Knights Parachute Team. As always, these plans are subject to change depending on acts of war, decisions by the military, and unplanned events (such as airplane related incidents).
THE 2 COURSES:
- Turnaround and around: This course will focus on entering and exiting turnarounds. A turnaround is defined as an obstacle that changes your direction by more than 90 degrees. On a typical turnaround, you can easily lose 1 second! We will focus on the concepts of “slow in, fast out”. This course will have a timer on it. The timer is for informational purposes only. We will not be keeping score. You should use the information to compare your own times to help you gauge your own improvement throughout the day.
- Slaloms and offsets: The slalom and offset is probably the most basic of the elements in autocrossing. This course will focus on those two features. You will learn the basic approach and how to handle a difficult approach into a slalom. At the end of the day, you will understand what we mean by getting behind the cone and turning early.
LUNCH:
THSCC's own Christine Allen will be providing bagged lunches for each participant and instructor. Lunch is included in the cost of the school. We may or may not take a lunch break.
WORKING/RUNNING:
Students will be divided into two groups. Group 1 will start on the turnaround course and Group 2 will begin on the slalom course. One half of the group will work the course and the other have will drive. We will split the drivers into two subsets. One subset will drive with instruction and the other subset will observe (you can learn a lot by watching!).
ENTERING THE SITE:
For this event, we will use the old Burch Industries entrance. If this is your first time at this site, keep a watchful eye for the large orange cone marking the entrance. Proceed down the path, through the gate, and onto the site. You should encounter "gate workers" either near the entrance or shortly after you enter the site who are there to have you sign the waiver, give you an armband (which you must wear), and to provide handouts for the day's activities. The "gate workers" will direct you to the pit area. Proceed to the pit area, find a free pit spot, visit registration at the bus, then return to your car and remove all loose contents. Raise the hood of your car and a "tech worker" will come by to do the minimal tech inspection.
We look forward to seeing you on Saturday!
